Proximity
Both of Pebble’s alternative routes would be disastrous to the bears of the Alaska Peninsula. The southern route ends 11 miles from largest congregation of bears on earth. The northern alternative passes 11 miles from Chinitna Bay, the most popular bear viewing destination in Lake Clark National Park.
McNeil Bears are not just McNeil Bears
McNeil bears need to cover lots of ground and utilize different habitats over the course of the summer. Many McNeil bears range across the mountains to Bristol Bay to utilize the largest intact salmon run on earth. Any threat to salmon is a threat to bears. Although bears range up to 100 miles a summer Pebble says they only need to study bears 3 miles from impacted areas so they won’t have to look at impacts to the most viewed bears in Katmai and Lake Clark National Park.
